Pre-orders are now being taken for my chapbook, Price Reduced Again. Don’t worry, y’all. I won’t chase you around the internet and demand a purchase. I’m just trying to be better about spreading the word. So here she goes.
.
Price Reduced Again is the first release from Backpack Press. Crystal Folz, who has created beautiful journals such as Shoots and Vines, is the owner of the press and has done an amazing job with layout and editing. I love the look and the feel of the book. It’s not glossy and I like that. It shouldn’t be.
.
My daughter, Amber Yoder, created the awesome cover art. Amber hand cut each of the tiles with a knife and pulled a print. It fits the theme perfectly. You may not be able to see it from this web picture, but there’s an old house on there and also a nickel with the word “LIBERTY” on it. Thank you, Amber. I love it!
.
The poems are all new and not posted on the internet. I originally set out to tell the story of my own financial struggles. But I always meet people who touch my soul. Their stories are in there, too.

Requests and checks can be mailed to:
Shoots and Vines
Backpack Press

.
The actual mailing of the chapbook will begin after its December 14 release.
.
The cost is $8.00 U.S.
$11.00 for orders outside of the U.S. (the extra charge is to cover shipping).
.
Many thanks to Crystal Folz for this beautiful opportunity. It’s not about money. It’s about creation. Being a poet and writer herself, Crystal understands the need to create and share words. She has been much more than an editor. She is a dear friend.
.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I appreciate you very much.

I CAN’T WAIT!!!!! Yay!!!! Congratulations, Julie, to one of the best! So, how do we get the autograph?

Hey, Karen! Haha! I hadn’t thought of that, but maybe I could come up with something. I do appreciate you so much, sis
Thank you for all of your kind words over the last year. I know it’s been at least a year, but probably longer. You are awesome. -J
How wonderful! Absolutely 150% congratulations!
Hi, Yousei! Thanks so much!! I’m glad to have met you here in this crazy lil’ world. I probably keep saying that, but I’ll say it again.
Wonderful! I want 2: one for me and one for my mother (shhh! don’t tell, it’s a Christmas gift)
*****************************************************
Thank you, Brig! Sister, that thrills my soul to hear that. I’m terrified that Crys is going to lose money on me…haha! Thanks a million times…and also for your friendship since the beginning of this blog! -J
Yay! You did it! Congratulations Julie!
Hey, Cat! Thank you very much! And congrats again on all your new ventures. What beautiful artwork.
yaaaaay! i’m doubly excited – for you to finally have this published, and for me to get a chunk of your all-new poems. merry christmas to all!
Hello, Joaquin & thank you! I sure have enjoyed reading your book!
You have expressed how you feel about he importance/selection of titles, and the one you choose for your book reveals you, your character and style, making it a dingily doggone wonderful good choice.
Congratulations, Julie.
Hey, Jack! And thank you. I love “dingily doggone wonderful.” Can I steal that? Just kidding.
The title actually came to me while I was placing yet another Craigslist ad to try to sell our old house. I’ll be lucky if I walk away with my ass after all this is over. Haha! But I laugh, because we still have a fingernail holding onto the edge. The spirit is pretty dang tough when it has to be. Things could be much, much worse, so I ain’t complaining…at least not this minute.
Thanks again, Jack. It’s always good to see you.
I have my letter and $8 in the mailbox for the mail person to pick up today. I want my copy of your work!!
Thank you so much, Technobabe! You are awesome. To come in here this afternoon and see that you’ve already mailed yours touched my heart big time. I just erased a long winded, rambling comment I originally typed to you. Haha! I’m sure everybody is glad of that:) In other words, I appreciate it more than I can even describe.
Hi Julie,
I just made a check out for two, one for me and one for a friend of mine. Congratulations!
Annie, thank you very much! To tell you the truth, I feel a little odd selling a book here. I know it’s stupid for me to feel that way. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. Poets do it all the time, and I’m happy when I read about their books. So I don’t even know for sure why I’m feeling that way. Boy, has it been a personal learning experience! But I do know one thing, and that is how much I appreciate you. Thank you so much for all your support and friendship.
How exciting. How do I go about getting a copy? Does she take paypal?
J
xoxo
Hi, Jo. Thank you! She’s taking checks (I’ll ask about money orders and let you know…I’m not sure but I’m assuming that’s okay) sent to the address below. She’s not doing Paypal to keep the cost lower. It is $11.00 outside of the US to cover international shipping and $8.00 inside the US.
Thank you so much, sis! Love You!
you have accomplished another goal! congrats!
remind me to touch base about this after the holidays…
i look forward to this one.
Hello, Kim. Thanks so much! It’s great to see you:)
I’m running into the other room to get my checkbook now. If I don’t do it now, I’ll lose this in the Christmas rush. Can hardly breathe with magazine deadlines and open house hosting and cookie baking and gift stuff, OMG how fabulous for you.
*****************************************************
Hi, Chris! Thank you so much! But please don’t worry. It’s totally cool. I won’t get upset if you don’t have the time. Shew…your rush sounds even crazier than mine…haha! Thank you so much for all the good words. -Julie
Congrats Mom! I’m so excited! Can’t wait to get a copy.
I’d like to voice a vote for a paypal option. Much more convenient. Writing and mailing a check just seems so archaic. Haha!
Can’t wait to see you for Christmas!
Love,
Amber
Hey, Amber Love! Everybody’s archaic to you…ha! ha! You’ll be first on my list. Thank you a million times for the beautiful artwork. I can only imagine how long it took to cut all that out and pull the print. It has been a dream of mine to have you do my first cover. Seriously! I used to dream about that. I can hardly believe that came true (and it probably wouldn’t have happened with a mainstream press…they have their own artists). I really appreciate all the freedom Crys has given me.
There was room to add a couple more poems you haven’t seen. And I’ve revised some, so I know you’ll love it.
I can’t wait to see you, either. Yay for Christmas!! Love You Always & Forever!! Mama
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! i have been waiting for this for too long. happy happy joy joy julie julie
Hey, dan and thank you so much! You rock my world!!
Looking forward to reading it, Jules. Amber’s cover work is so clever x
********************************************************
Hi, Michelle! Isn’t that cover awesome? It’s just perfect for the theme. I was a little hesitant to ask Amber, because she has so much going on, and I was worried about adding more stress to her life. But as usual, my worries are silly and unfounded. She was very happy to do it. And I’m so thrilled that she was the one to do it. That makes it very special to me. I’ve got the original print in a frame on the wall! Thanks so much, Michelle. xxooxx -J
Julie, that’s excellent – I’ll post off a cheque as soon as I can!
Thank you, Ashley! But please…no rush and no pressure to purchase. Believe me, I know how it is. Your book is going to be under my Christmas tree, and I had to ask someone else to buy it for me. Haha! But I can’t wait to hold it in my hands. Excellent work!
Congrats Julie!
I sure wish I had enough material to do something like this. Out of curiosity, what’s the initial print run? I’ll bet they sell out in no time.
Hi, JR! Thanks so much. To tell you the truth, I’m not even sure about the size of the initial run (Crys is the one doing all the hard work). I’m guessing fifty at first to see how it goes. Maybe a little more, but too many at first would be risky. She has set up a distro and will be putting them in some local shops. I’m hoping to put some in a local bookstore. I know a bunch of people in the small press world, and if half of them respond, we should be okay. A joke I’ve heard is that we tend to circulate the same ten dollars over and over (in other words, we buy each others’ work). Ha! ha!
But that’s really what it’s all about…definitely not a money maker.
Well, I’ll quit yapping for two seconds. JR, if you do put your stories together, I’ll be happy to see that. Keep in touch over the months (or whenever…even years) to let me know, because I’ll buy when payday comes. You probably have a lot more material than you think. Thanks again. I appreciate the good words.
Julie, I’m sending out my order today. I love the cover–it’s perfect for the title, and it’s very meaningful because the mother/daughter connection. Congratulations, friend.
Thank you so much, Christine! Your friendship means the world to me. I just sent you a note. Your posts are so interesting! You have inspired me once again:)
Check’s in the mail!!
Thank you so much, Karen! I look forward to the day when I can hold your book in my hands…and travel to your state to hear you read. And thank you again for your friendship. I’m starting to do the broken record thing again, but what a good feeling it is to have met you!
It looks wonderful, I like that you went for the deliberately ‘not glossy’ look…. Look forward to reading it…. (scratching head about writing international checks, but sure i can manage….)
Hi, Juliet! HA! HA! I’m with you on the international check thing. I don’t have a clue, not even about money/business in my own country. A fat lot of help I am with sales. I’ve heard that poets are idiots about business, but I can only speak for myself about the idiot thing:)
I’m hoping it can go Paypal eventually to make it easier for folks in other countries. But it’s one of those wait and see things, I guess. I’ll let you know as soon as I know anything. Thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate it much.
I (finally) ordered it too, a few days ago. I am now impatient to receive it .
Poets being bad with business is not good for me: my day job will have to be related with my business degree (MBA). So, I’d either be a bad poet, or a bad business person?
Well, I guess time will tell, for now I am just a very busy person, but I will make some time now that I am done with my finals and read your new poems until I get the book .
Hi, Ana! Thank you very much for ordering. That means a lot to me, and I do appreciate it.
Nah, I think you’ll be good at business and poetry. Actually, a lot of poets are. Just not me. I’m the world’s worst with my own business. I can work for others and do really well at sales and customer service, etc. if I believe in what they are doing. But I’m weak with my own. I guess I need to get over that. My degree was an MFA, and only the craft of writing was emphasized. Now I hear that they also offer a dual degree in Arts Management. I could use that!
I think copies will be mailed in January, but I’m not sure. I will let everyone know as soon as Crys begins mailing them. I’m glad your finals are over now. What a relief! Have a beautiful week:)
Julie, Orders are rolling in and will be shipped out all this week. I’m sending you several through the mail. I can’t seem to get a hold of you through email. It keeps bouncing everything back. Please contact me at backpackpress@shootsandvines.com
I think you have my phone number also. If not, let me know.
Love,
Crystal
Hi, Crys. Thanks so much for letting me know. I’m not sure what’s going on with the e-mail, but I will send you a note right now. Please let me know if you don’t receive it. Love much, J
Hi Julie, still keen to grab your collection but haven’t heard back from Crystal yet, but I see things are still cookin so I’ll send her another e-mail
Hi, Ashley! Crys had some computer problems over the holiday season. I feel for her on that one. Thanks so much for trying again. Yes, things are still a go. But please don’t feel any pressure to order. I’m pretty mellow about it (probably too mellow…haha!)
The first orders are getting mailed out this week. I’m so excited, because I haven’t seen the “final” yet. The rough copy was awesome. It was just what I had pictured in my mind. My daughter did the cover by cutting each image from tiles. It’s got an “old” feel to it, which I like. Not slick by design.
As for your beautiful book, I should be getting it any day now. Yippee! I can’t wait to get it! I keep running out to the mail to see if it’s there. I’ll let you know when I receive it. From what I’ve read at your site, it is absolutely excellent!
Thanks so much, Ashley:)
I have mailed out copies for all the orders I have received so far. If you don’t receive yours within the week, please let Julie or myself know.
Orders are only available through snail mail.
Hi Julie! ‘Price Reduced Again’ arrived safe & sound and I have got to get back to you with some feedback, but basically, after first read, it’s clarity of expression is fantastic (as I knew it would be!)
More thoughts to follow!
Hi, Ashley! I’m so glad you received it and like it. That’s good enough for me:) Thank you so much!
